World Photography Day 2022

A report by Elleen Wankhar (5th Semester MCVP 2022)

On the 19th of August 2022, the Media Club of the Mass Media Department of St Anthony’s College in Collaboration with The Northeast Archive organised a Photo Walk with the Students for World Photography Day 2022, this wonderful event would have not been a success without the help of Ma’am Junisha Kharkongor and Sir Nathaniel Majaw alongside the 5th Semester students of MCVP and Media Technologies.

The one-day event had an online registration as well as a walk-in registration at 9:00 am for all the participants from all ages, the Photo Walk began at around 10:00 am, the walk had started from St Anthony’s College to the Governor’s House to Ward’s Lake, State Central Library, then Police Bazaar and back to St Anthony’s College. During the whole walk, it was pleasant to see the participants whole heartedly taking part in this event and thoroughly enjoy the art of photography. The joyous feeling of walking and taking photos with a big group of people was fun and memorable. We all got the pleasure of enjoying the scenic beauty Shillong has to offer. With the bright sun shining over our heads and the fresh breeze to cool us off as we were walking. Refreshments were offered to us by our lovely teachers who made sure everyone was safe and taking the same route. As photographers we have the privilege of capturing moments especially during the hustle and bustle of people’s day to day lives but when we do get to capture these candid moments, do we get to know the person we are capturing? Or do they even get a copy of the photograph we take? Which is why the ideas of having Instant/Polaroid cameras were one of the best ideas that came to our mind. We get to take pictures of certain individuals but instead of keeping the memory to ourselves, we gift it back to them with a sticker of our department so that they would remember us by.

Seeing a large number of people coming together to appreciate what photography has given us over the years and utilising it whether be it as just as a hobby or something we are so passionate about; it was touching to see all of us come together to do something we all love, to escape our reality and just enjoy the moment.

Organising this event was truly an amazing idea to bring along a community of people who share their love of Photography. Overall, this whole experience was a delight and was probably one of the most memorable events.

When we arrived at the residence of Sir Thomas Lim, it was truly a sight to see, the whole area was covered in greenery, the architecture was so beautiful and mesmerizing the overall place felt so welcoming and so warm, it was really kind and thoughtful for Sir Lim to take up the responsibility in looking after for the participants after having to walk for a long period of time and serving a delicious scrumptious lunch to end the day.
